Hello! My husband and I are planning to stay at the Grand club and Marival in June. Has anyone stayed in June before. I have heard many mixed reviewed. The negative reviews I have heard are mostly that the food was not great, that it is difficult to make reservations at restaurants, and the that beds are very hard. I have heard it is a beautiful resort. I was also wondering if there are a lot of spiders and any sting rays, sharks, etc. that one cannot go in the ocean. I would appreciate some information on this hotel. Thank you for your help.

I am planning on going to Puerta Vallarta but am terrified of spiders especially big ones that have eyes and hair. Am I going to see a lot of these types of spiders? I will truly have a horrible time if these spiders are common and are often found indoors or even worse in your bed. Ugh. PLease tell me if this is the case. I really do want to go but cannot imagine a week of terror.

Would anyone know the phone number and the correct dialing order, (since I am not much experienced with making international calls), to the resort Viva Vallarta? I think it is actually located in the suburb of Punta De Mita, Mexico. My wife left for there yesterday with a girl friend of hers and will be there until the 21st and I need to get in touch with her and she gave me the number before she left, but I must have written it down wrong or something because she was in a hurry and so was I. When I call that number now, it is a number that does NOT exist. Any information to how I might be able to get in touch with her or that resort would be extremely appreciated. I have searched and searched the internet and I can easily find the resort, but NOT one phone number to the resort or any numbers to a visitor center. That is pathetic. They will go out of their way to make and publish a nice listing to try and sell their services, but no phone number??? That is IGNORANT!!! Thank you anyone ahead of time for any help.

my friend has a time share at Sharaton Boganvilias Hotel and Resort in Puerto Vallarta. It was hit bad in the last huricane in 2002. He has been trying to pay his anual dues for a week a year which is $585./00 per year for the week. He has called the New Port, California office and that line is out of service until May. He has written to the New Port, California Bank of America where dues are to be paid. He gets no answer. He E-Mailed to the address in Puerto Vallarta. No answer. He went to visit in December. The guards said the hotel resort was closed, damaged and will never open again. The Internet said a month ago that the hotel resort would open in May. Now that same Inteernet connection says the Hotel will open in July. My friends week is for August/. If the Boganvilas Sharaton will open the end of June, first of July, what will happen to the time share people that had their weeks from last November and December and this Jan through August and when will we ever be able to talk to anyone to get answers. If indeed we will still have our time share and be able to use it, I want my friend to pay his dues. However, if like the guards have said, that it will never open again, my friend would be a fool to pay his dues. Will someone please answer me so I can give my friend the needed information and advice. Thanks, Rose.

Was looking at the Best Western Puerto de Luna for a 2 week stay mid March 03. Want to take my laptop and sit somewhere warm and comfortable and do some work and have some nice 'local' restaurants to visit at night. Has anyone stayed here and is it clean and not rundown? Where is it in relation to downtown and accessing things to do.

Hola, We are yearly travelers to PV and always stay at Las Palmas. We are hesitant to stay there again this year in May due to the effects that Hurricane Kenna had on the hotel and beach area. We are looking into the Qualton Club and Spa as an alternative. If anyone has info on the Qualton good or bad we would like to hear from you. Also any updates on the status of Las Palmas would also be greatly appreciated. We understand that they will be open again in May but would hate to spend the money and be staying in a hotel that is still being repaired and renovated. The beach was so beautiful and I hear it now has lots of large rocks instead of sand!

I have a week off work so I called the last minute club and asked for the cheapest ticket to wherever...It happened to be PV and now I'm having a major anxiety attack! I don't speak Spanish. I've never been to Mexico, I'm on a budget and I don't know what to expect and where to sleep on arrival this coming Friday! I looked up several budget hotels on the net but are they open for business? Ideally I'd love to stay a day or to in PV but spend the rest of the week somewhere in a fishing village anywhere, far away from the crowds, tourists. Rough accommodations are not a problem - a bed, nite lamp and a fan are ok - I just want peace and rest from all plus I love going native. Any help or directions???

Delta, BC CA - Tuesday, October 29, 2002 at 15:56:00 (PST)
Hello all. I have been going to P.V. anually since I was 5 and would consider it as kind of a "home away from home". For all of those looking for a great night, meaning dancing, mingling and well of course drinking! THE place to go is the Christine, Thursday and Sunday nights are open bar you pay about $20 USD for cover but Thurs. & Sun are open bar. This place is awesome I have always thought of it as the "P.V. Studio 54" lots of fun people and good music. The building itself is cool too, wall dancing is a must! I can't remember what nights there are no cover charge but if you ask anyone downtown they will know the schedule it is a very poplular place. The party starts exactly at midnight, try to be there for the opening light show, it is unreal. However there is a dress code, no jeans or shorts. Definately worth going. The Catus is good too, the Collage not-so-much I have gone several times but it has never been hopping, however I was informed that it was going to be under new management but I haven't been to P.V. yet this year to see it for myself. It you want a more laid back atmosphere the Roxy downtown is great, live music and it is a cute little place. Normally I go there for a pre-party type thing before the Christine or the Catus. Once you get to P.V. you should be able to find out the club of the night, the major clubs rotate nights so if you plan it right you can hit every open bar, or if you would rather every night with no cover! Have fun!!

I know that I will probably be missing some hotels but here goes a brief rundown on what I know:
NUEVO VALLARTA - I am not going to list each hotel as they are doing fine. Pools have been cleaned of sand, or just finishing up. Most palapas down but being reconstructed. The only hotel that really had some major damage was Bahia del Sol - a small hotel between Marival and Sierra. Also Villa Veradaro had alot of broken glass. Otherwise, all ok!
Archies Wok (not a hotel but near the beach and one of my favorites!) Open and fine.
Buenaventura-Closed - probably two weeks.
Premiere Buenaventura - closed - probably two weeks
Blue Bay Getaway-(Sungetaway recently - the one next to the Sheraton) - Closed indefinitely. They are sending me a press release. Email me if you want a copy. A good amount of structural damage but for those that remember, it was formerly the Miranda and was damaged then during the earthquake.
Camino Real - Pool is being cleaned - otherwise all fine.
Continental Plaza - Closed - some say two months.
Crown Paradise - Sorry - still haven't gotten there.
Costa Vida - OK Cielito Lindo Boat - fine
Embarcadero Pacifico - fine on the marina side - the villas suffered a bit of damage on the lower floors but being repaired and open to the rest of the rooms. Emperador - Amazingly fine! Lost some palapas but all is well.
Fiesta Americana - Closed now - probably one week. No major damage - mostly outside.
Holiday Inn- Closed for a few weeks.
Hacienda Buenaventura - fine Krystal - one pool closed but otherwise ok
Los Arcos - fine
Los Tules - closed til ??
Las Palmas - closed for approximately 2 weeks
Las Glorias - " "
Lindo Mar - fine
La Jolla - open and good
Marriot - fine
Melia - fine (actually all of the hotels in the marina are fine)
Molina de Agua - only open to the garden rooms
Presidente - open - ok
Pescador - closed for one week
Pelicanos - closed for approximately 2 weeks
Qualton - open and fine - some pool damage
Rosita - closed for approximately two weeks
San Marina - 100% OK and open
Sheraton - Closed - some say one month or more.
Tropicana - Will open - Thursday - pool damage
Villa del Mar - open
Villa del Palmar - opening in one week
Westin - open with one pool open only

BOATS All fine except the Princessa Yelapa. All others are running as scheduled. Horseback riding tours - running as scheduled. Jungle Safari's - some running, some not. Las Animas - fine Quimixto - some damage to restaurants on the beach Yelapa - only via the grapevine but hear that there was a good amt of damage on the beach area. Caletas - pier gone - will be back up by the end of the week.

This report thanks to Pamela .

One report I read said that the beaches are full of glass, is this true in Nuevo Vallarta? I was also wondering how safe the water will be. I know that you are not supposed to drink it, but I am concerned about the restaurants cooking with it, and my bathing in it. Thanks

Hi, We are scheduled to visit Costa Azul Adventure resort 30 miles north of Puerto Vallarta next Monday 11/4/02 and are concerned about the effects of Hurricane Kenna. We are specifically concerned with the water quality of the ocean, i.e. bacteria levels and such from the flooding runoff. Do you have any information, or can you refer me to someone who might? Thank you, Cindy Everman everman@gte.net

While Hurricane Kenna caused some major problems in Puerto Vallarta, cleanup began immediately and the mayor has promised a complete restoration before high season begins. We will try and find out all we can and post it here , so check back for updates.

Hi I have just arrived back from PV I stayed at the Royal Decamercon what a fab place first class. value for money Don't expect the sea to be clear big waves pick up the sand and it's a bit muddy looking but what the hell great for bodysurfin. Food Fantastic very very clean DISCO not up to much most night Mexican music played and nobody in there but you can drink till 3 in the morning Late night snack bar first class look out for a guy called Liou Alberto he just wonts to pick up as much english as he can a cool guy. A word of advise Vallarta adventues run most of the trip i.e the dolfin swimming and a safari and various other trips try and book direct as your travel company will rip you off maybe 20% more on the prise. make sure you take lots of cash with you things are not cheep to shots of tequila in PV Carlos O'Brians cost 100 peso thats £10.00 in sterling as the mexican don't pay any TAX all the income is put on goods so be carefull. I'm not hear to put you off but to say you will have a fantastic time and I wish I was still there only been home two days and I hate it. Nikki

Hi, I am a W/M in mid thirties, physically fit, and will be visiting Puerto Vallarta on Nov 12, staying at the all-inclusive Qualton Resort Hotel located in the south beach area. Has anyone stayed there and if so, how were the accomadations and food. Was the food buffet or a la carte ? ALSO, while there, I would like to meet a very attractive female, preferrably age 18 to 25, very sensuous and open minded, clean and drug free, to party with. I will pay vacation related expenses. I went to p.v 5th-20th aug 2002. It was the best holiday i have ever had.I would definetly recommend the royal decamaron hotel it is all inclusive and is great for any age great entertainment , activity pool and theatre and disco at night. Food is lovely !! there is a italien, thaI,jap, steak, buffet, and mexican resturaunt. As it is the rainy season we had hardly any rain. 3 thunderstorms and rained 2wice in the afternoon at 5ish but that was all we had for 14 days. Very Very clean .Very freindly people and i would definetly recommend the swimming with the dolphins. But book on line usually the hotel is booked up so u would miss out :( u also have to pay a tax of £30pp in pesos else u are put in jail and i wouldnt bother taking dollars everything is in pesos its muchj easier to take pesos we made that mistake of having to change dollars in to pesos out there.

The weather is very hot an humid and as it was the rainy season it hardly rained a quick shower in the afternoon and three thunderstorms at night that was all the rain we had for 14 days. The food is great , very cleen and friendly people although they bug u a lot on the beach to buy souvenirs etc and outside the shops in puerto vallarta town. I would definetly go back ! . I wasnt told but u have to pay about £30 tax each to leave the country else u are put in jail. ( which has to be in pesos and i wouldnt bother taking dollars they use pesos out there and all prices are in pesos.)

My wife and I were at the San Marino Plaza late 1999. The hotel is basic but comfortable and the staff were friendly and helpful. The daytime activities are quite noisy up until about 9/10pm.We had a room overlooking the pool and stage area which we eventually changed because of the noise. Our second room was overlooking the main street and was much quieter and had a private balcony. The food was not as varied as we expected as we do not like spicey food, but there is always something you can eat if you dont like spicey things. All in all we found it to be ok and the lack of frills is more than made up for by the perfect location. This year(2002)we are staying at the Las Palmas Beach Resort and would be very grateful for any info on the hotel from anyone who has stayed there.

Working in Cancun: 1.- Instead of the Pto. Vallarta Board you shold go to some of the Cancun boards--especially www.cancunassist.com Read and then click onto the message board. 2.- Do you speak Spanish? It is necessary. 3.- No one will hire you long distance and least by e-mail. You will not get to anyone with decision-making power with e-mail--they also speak Spanish--there is a procedure for getitng a job--especially for a foreigner. E-mail is not answered quickly if at all and the numbers you will normally find will be for reservations. Good luck.

Additional travel tips-The very WORST place to change your money is the airport, hotel is the second worst as a rule. The little Casa de Cambio, little hole in wall(literally)businesses in just about every block give rates almost as good as the bank on dollars and traveler's checks. Nearly all restuarants or shops will take dollars, even though the rate will not be as good as the bank. There are several banks in Puerto Vallarta, but they close at 1 PM. Nearly every business will take credit cards and in 20 visits to Puerto Vallarta I have never heard of anyone complaining of any fraud. In fact, they are more careful to make sure to check ID than in the States. Cab fare in not negiotable, the rates are set by the government and is priced in "zones". From the South part of town, to the airport is about $6. Many short trips will only cost 25 - 30 pesos. We have ridden the buses many, many times and never been cheated. To save time and to keep from holding the bus and the driver up, I do try to always have the correct change. The rain, in the rainy season, comes down quickly, without much warning, and furiously, but it doesn't last long. Downtown Puerto Vallarta is quite large, and there is no reason to avoid it just because of the cruise ships. You probably won't notice many more people on the streets, if any. We have eaten in scores of restuarants, drink iced drinks and tap water, eaten the fruits and vegetables sold by the street vendors with absolutely no problems. Just be sure to drink plenty of water, all the farmacias and tiendas sell bottled water for about $.50, and it is easy to drink when it is nice and cold. You cannot take fruit, vegetables, plants or meat into Mexico. There are several modern supermarkets in town that would have most anything you could think of, if you can't find a restuarant that suits your mood.

Travel Tips to Puerta Vallerta: (this makes me sound paranoid!!) 1. Be sure you have your travel documents. Either an original Birth Certificate or a Passport. And of course your tickets??!! 2. When you get to PV you push a button at the airport....green light means continue--red light means you will be searched. Suppose to be random.... 3. We are arriving in PV during the heat of the day (3:00 p.m. ish) It will be both hot and HUMID. It could be 85-93ish...but with the high humidity (60+%) if will feel much warmer. It’s called the “Heat Index”. I’m wearing shorts to the airport..... 4. The average rainfall in PV during the month of July is 12 inches of rain. Plan, and hopefully enjoy, some weather. When it rains, it will still be 87-90+ degrees. People say, after the rain, it “feels better”. 5. When getting ready to leave the PV airport to your resort, you can take a bus, taxi or van. It will be the highest fare/rate while in PV. For some reason the airport transportation is controlled by Federal Government and creates a higher rate than everywhere elese. Most people don’t worry about the higher rate, because they want to get to their room/resort. Other walk across the road, via a overhead ramp, and pick up a taxi for a lower rate. 6. It sees like most people don’t rent cars in PV. They either take a bus, which is part of the “Mexico Experience”, or a taxi. Try to have the correct change when riding the bus......bus drivers have been known to short change you. But, the busses are so cheap.....it’s not that big of a deal. When using a taxi ALWAYS negotiate the fee prior to your ride. This is expected...and definitely suggested. 7. It is recommended that you exchange your money at the airport or a bank. I have heard they are the best exchange rate. Your hotel is probably the worse place to exchange. Also, there are ATM’s around with good rates. 8. Snorkeling......apparently not that great around PV. There are a couple of islands, Marietas Islands, in the North Bay, that suppose to have the most clear water. Also, some remote beaches, such as Yelapa, has some “good” snorkeling. 9. Daily routine for some.....alot of people get up fairly early and eat breakfast and explore around the area. The take “a siesta” and hang around the pool in the afternoon during the heat of the day. People eat dinner fairly late in Mexico......after 7 for sure. The sunsets are awesome over the bay. 10. Most people don’t get sick in PV, but some do. Some because they are not careful what food they eat. Some are careful and still get sick. BE CAREFUL. Bring some medication......just in case. 11, The town of PV is right next to jungle type terrain. Depending where you go, there can be mosquitoes.....also bees. Mostly on the beach at dawn and sunset. Also by rivers. Bring repellent. 12. Many people bring food for a day or two.....(it’s OK)....Just good to have something available before you get situated. 13. Street/Beach Vendors.....lots of salespeople will want to sell you anything.....lots of people enjoy this.....if you don’t want to look just a No gracias.....and they won’t bug you. 14. The most complaining comes from Timeshare Salespeople/Sharks....they can be a problem......they trick you by offering you something of being nice to you....then BAM.....hit you up for a timeshare presentation push.....heard lots of complaints about these people. 15. Really easy to get burnt in the sun or overcast/clouds....be careful..and use lots of sun block. 16. Credit Cards: Recommended by most not to use your credit card. Pay in cash/pesos.....lots of cloning of cards (especially in PV) and reports of charges on card. Get cash from ATM’s, banks, etc. 17. I have heard it is sunny and humid in the morning...and late afternoon often brings LOTS of rain......less humid afterwards. Oh yea, also lots of thunder and lighting. 18. Here’s a good one: The cruise ship....Elation is in port on Wednesday...stay away from downtown, etc......lots of people, higher prices.....or check out the cruise people.... 19. Here’s what special about PV: The imperfection, the randomness of it all is captivating to the soul and healing to to body and addictive to the semiconscious mind. Thought I’d throw this in...are you still reading this??? 20. Remember, it will probably rain in the afternoon. A jungle (Sierra Madre Mountains), which needs lots of water, comes right down to PV. River runoff often times turns the Bay brown in spots.

The last time I was in PV there was a flea market up on the hill. It was an old building with two stories, I believe. There was a dealer who sold gemstones. Is the flea market still there? We're stopping at PV for a day off a cruise ship and need to use time wisely. Thanks, Jan Lehet

My wife and I are leaving for Puerto Vallarta July 2nd to retire there. We have a great place to stay for the first week. We need help to find a place to live among the local citizens where we may rent a house real cheap. It would be helpful if the place is even partly furnished with a stove, refrigerator and the normal furniture in order to live. The place will need to have telephone service, at least room fans but we prefer air conditioning. We would like to spend between $150 - $350 US for rent. If a house to rent among the local citizens is not possible in the price range above, a comfortable apartment that is furnished will do, with the afformentioned amenities. Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Just a note to let you know that while in Puerto Villarta, (May 3rd-May 7th) travelling with a group of 10....four of us were ripped off BLIND at the hotel Vista Club Playa Del Oro. One girl's debit card was cleaned out, and between my boyfriend and myself, $500.00 in cash was stolen. Another guest walked in to her room, a worker was working on the sink and her purse was wide open with her credit card sticking out of her wallet. We will never visit that hotel again. As for Hotel Quest. We spent three out of four days trying to "un-cancel" our room, which was cancelled by someone at Hotel Quest when we arrived. The only accomodating person to us was Brenda at the front desk. Between Hotel Quest and the resort, we had the worst vacation, which WILL be posted everywhere on the Internet chat forums as a group effort by all of us.

The best time to visit Mexico is just any time you have the opportunity! The rainy season, from June to October or so, it hot and muggy, but some prices are cheaper and there is not quite as many tourists. The rest of the year is cooler and dry, thus the more popular "high" season. More tourists and higher hotel rates. But, any old time is a good time.

Our little travel group will be visiting PV in Oct. The group started out 5 years ago when most of us met while vacationing in Manzanillo. We have traveled to some wonderful places together. Last year we were in Hong Kong and Bali. The 2 years prior we were in Playa Del Carmen. Over the years we have determined that the beach is a key factor if the holiday is going to be a success. We were very disappointed with the beaches in Bali. After the beaches in Playa I think we were spoiled. So we are most interested in where the best beaches are in PV and which hotel has the best beach. Your thoughts on this would be most appreciated.

I spent the first week of March in PV and had the best time. I am 24 years old and had heard mixed reviews about the city. I completely recommend PV. I was looking for a lot of fun that wasn't so Americanized. You can still party until 6am and drink the water. It isn't Cancun though. With its gigantic clubs and turquoise water, but amazing in other ways. It has all the old world charm with great dining and fun bars. This was my first non-Spring Break vacation and definitely worth it. The Mayan Palace in the Marina was great. For day trips, we took the one to Yelapa. The dining is the best part. Definitely, "The Happy Crab" downtown. The best service, food and reasonable prices. Also, Brasil, Roberto's and The Blue Shrimp(order Coconut Shrimp). If I had more time I would have taken the trip to the Marietta Islands too. Downtown is very safe and a lot of fun. There's a walkway for about a mile(like a boardwalk) that had sculptures along the way. Take the bus downtown, it's the cheapest, 4 pesos. I can't wait to go again. If you have specific questions, you can ask.
