COLEGIO MEXICO-AMERICANO
The Location The Need
  • Puerto Vallarta is a resort and retirement area that attracts large numbers of Americans and Canadians, and requires high literacy and language skills by the residents for better jobs.
  • The area is a "meeting" location of one of the largest and most business-oriented states in Mexico - Jalisco.
  • The area is one of the fastest growing in Mexico, attracted by good weather and the prospect of employment.
  • Nearly half of Vallarta's resident 300,000 population is under 20.
  • Most children only progress to the 8th grade before they go to work.
  • Low income and single-parent families can not afford quality education for their children…. especially in schools that educate in English as well as Spanish.
  • A school is needed that offers activities for the full day to provide a 'safe haven' while parents work. That means offering lunch on the school grounds.
  • No other school currently provides strong instruction in character-building nor attempts to build leadership qualities for tomorrow's world.
The Vision
  • An educational facility that's affordable for low & moderate income families.
  • A school with high academic standards that teaches fluency in both English and Spanish.
  • Classrooms with a high teacher/student ratio. Maximum of 26 children per classroom with 3 Kindergarten classes.
  • A curriculum that includes Christian morality and attempts to build strong leadership qualities. (Although not "religious" training as such.)
  • A facility that would be open the full work day, so children need not return to empty homes
  • A school that is open to all, not just church members.
6 Grades will open in the fall of 2003. All classrooms are now completed through the 6th grade.
